چکیده

We use the Bullet Cluster (1E0657-56) to investigate the extent to which star formation in cluster galaxies is influenced by ram pressure from supersonic gas (Mach 3) during a cluster merger. While the effects of ram pressure have been studied for individual galaxies infalling into galaxy clusters, this system provides a unique opportunity to investigate the impact of dramatic merger events on the cluster galaxy population. In this analysis we use Spitzer IRAC data to study star formation. At the redshift of the cluster the 6.2 μm PAH feature is redshifted into the 8 μm band, enabling use of the m4.5-m8 color as a proxy for specific star formation rate. We find that the color distribution on the two sides of the shock differ by less than 2σ, and conclude that ram pressure from the shock front has no dramatic, immediate impact on the star formation of cluster galaxies in the Bullet Cluster. Determination of Shock Standoff Distance for Wedge at Supersonic Flow

An experimental investigation is conducted to calculate the shock standoff (SSO) distance in front of an acute-angled wedge. For this experimentation, simple water flows channel analysis is carried out. The flow velocity is varied from 13.2 cm/s to 25.5 cm/s increasing in steps of 1 cm/s. A velocity of 13.2 cm/s corresponds to Froude number 1.13 and velocity of 25.5 cm/s to Froude number 1.41. ...

Star Formation Triggered by Snr Impact into Magnetized Neutral Clouds

Present day star formation (SF) takes place in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). These contain a wealth of structures on all length-scales with highly supersonic motions and it is believed that these supersonic motions induce the observed density inhomogeneities in the gas that drive star formation. Suggested candidates for driving supersonic motions and SF include supernova shocks. Considering th...

Supersonic bullet trajectory estimation using ballistic shock wave arrivals at an acoustic sensor array

One approach to locate the point of fire of a supersonic bullet is to first estimate the trajectory of the bullet and then trace the trajectory back to topographic or man-made obstructions on a digital map. The supersonic flight of a bullet generates a ballistic shock wave, and the trajectory of the bullet can be estimated by measuring the time delay between the shock wave arrivals at each sens...

Magnetically Regulated Star Formation in Turbulent Clouds

We investigate numerically the combined effects of supersonic turbulence, strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion on cloud evolution leading to star formation. We find that, in clouds that are initially magnetically subcritical, supersonic turbulence can speed up star formation, through enhanced ambipolar diffusion in shocks. The speedup overcomes a major objection to the standard scenar...

The Speed of the 'bullet' in the Merging Galaxy Cluster 1e0657–56

Deep Chandra exposures of the hot galaxy cluster 1E0657–56 have revealed a highly dynamical state of the system due to an ongoing merger with a massive subcluster. The system is observed shortly after the first core-passage of the infalling subcluster, which moves approximately in the plane of the sky and is preceded by a prominent bow shock with Mach number M∼ 3. The inferred shock velocity of...
